Director Gregg Araki’s MYSTERIOUS SKIN, adapted from Scott Heim’s acclaimed novel, is an intensely powerful chronicle of childhood innocence lost. The film features starmaking turns from Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception, Looper, The Dark Knight Rises) and Brady Corbet (Thirteen) alongside outstanding performances from co-stars Michelle Trachtenberg (Eurotrip, Ice Princess), Mary Lynn Rajskub (TV’s 24) and Academy Award® nominee Elizabeth Shue (Leaving Las Vegas). At the age of eight, Kansas youngsters Neil and Brian played on the same little league baseball team. Now, ten years later, the two boys couldn’t be more different. Neil is a charismatic but emotionally aloof male hustler while Brian is a nervous introvert obsessed with the idea that he has been abducted by a UFO. When the boys’ parallel lives inevitably intersect, the pair unearth dark, repressed secrets on a harrowing and unforgettable journey of self-discovery.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: The film has a weird buoyancy.
Fresh: The usual Araki elements are here (hustlers, rebels, uproar, the absurd), but now he appears to be working with focus and compassion.
Fresh: There is a terrible, terrifying honesty at the core of Mysterious Skin that will make it chillingly recognizable to some viewers and important to recognize for others.
Rotten: The audience has gotten the point roughly 90 minutes before the characters do.
This movie is something that will leave a mark on your heart forever.
Powerful and Shocking
Although there are too many homosexual/homoerotic encounters in this movie, I thought that the movie wonderfully explained the psychology behind male prostitution. A mother who frequently jumped from one man to another, a coach who molested an eight year old boy and the lack of proper parental supervision (including the absence of a father figure in Neal's life) were excellently depicted as some of the most powerful and influential events that have occurred in the lives of too many young kids in America that have consequently contributed to a life as male prostitutes.
This movie did not receive a 5 stars mainly because it has too many homosexual/homo erotic scenes; the movie seemed more as a gay movie than a drama movie!
Best gay film ever
I enjoyed it because it was both itense happy and just over all good
