Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The screenplay isn't written so much as assembled in carefully slotted little blocks, following the rules of a screenwriting textbook. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Dec 8, 2011

Rotten: The only entertaining way to watch New Year's Eve is as a cruel experiment in which performers stranded with absolutely no script support are forced to subsist on pure presence, which quickly becomes a blood sport in which only a few survive. – Linda Holmes, NPR, Dec 9, 2011

Rotten: What can be said about a movie that is nice and awful? That has a warm spirit and is 100 percent phony? That has all the stars in the galaxy and all the appeal of rotting fish? – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle, Dec 8, 2011

Rotten: New Year's Eve is a perfect example of why the adjective "Hollywood" is so often used as a pejorative. – Rafer Guzman, Newsday, Dec 9, 2011

"New Year's Eve" is the type of movie that's so unbelievably shallow, derivatively sappy and incredulously dull, it makes you wonder why on Earth someone would even agree to produce, let alone direct, such a fallacy of a film. Honestly, wasn't "Valentine's Day" bad enough? Evidently not, since director Garry Marshall figured that he and the people at Warner Bros. could squeeze a few more million dollars from unsuspecting moviegoers' wallets by releasing yet another soul-crushingly awful film in which a bunch of random big-name actors get paid to put on their worst Razzie-worthy performances by portraying a menagerie of annoying, forgettable, soulless romantic comedy stereotypes. And not only is the acting excruciatingly dreadful, but the script is bland and convoluted, the dialogue is embarrassingly cheesy and the characters are so genuinely unfunny and obnoxious, you just wanna punch them all in the face at times. If you love watching this sort of heavy-handed cinematic trash, then by all means, click the rent button and prepare to be disappointed. However, if you really want to get your money's worth, I suggest buying a good romantic comedy like "Bridget Jones's Diary" or even "Knocked Up". I completely regret watching this film on an airplane for free, and I sincerely hope Marshall will stop making these inane, uncreative holiday-themed romances for good. They're just plain terrible. I mean, what could they think of next that could possibly be worse than this god-awful dreck of a movie? A film about random people falling in love on Arbor Day? Perhaps.

Totally Worth It!!

I don't know why you guys are giving it so much crap. You need to look beyond what is being screened and defined the message that it is sending to everyone! It's giving hope to everyone that the new year will be even better than the last. But anyways, I enjoyed it and it's totally worth buying. Better than Valentine's Day by far.

This movie is so funny and I think the reason that it has bad reviews is that there is not much of a plot line. I think that the cast is great and I LOVE Lea Michelle. It is so worth it!! :)
