About the Movie
Nightcrawler is a pulse-pounding thriller set in the nocturnal underbelly of contemporary Los Angeles. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Lou Bloom, a driven young man desperate for work who discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime. Finding a group of freelance camera crews who film crashes, fires, murder and other mayhem, Lou muscles into the cut-throat, dangerous realm of nightcrawling—where each police siren wail equals a possible windfall and victims are converted into dollars. Aided by Nina (Rene Russo), a veteran of the blood-sport that is local TV news, Lou blurs the line between observer and participant to become the star of his own story.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: A mesmerizing cipher, Lou is a spiritual descendant of Robert De Niro's Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver, and of the withholding protagonists in the existential French crime films of Robert Bresson and Jean-Pierre Melville
Fresh: For a first-time director, Gilroy demonstrates an uncommon assurance, not only in his audacious tonal shifts but in the stellar work he elicits from his cast and crew.
Fresh: Like an alternate version of Network in which Faye Dunaway cannibalizes the conscientious William Holden character, Nightcrawler cleverly dispenses with any debate about the tyranny of ratings and the erosion of privacy.
Fresh: Filmmaker Gilroy, brother to Tony (of the darkly marvellous Michael Clayton), makes every cinematic second count. If you blink you miss a tell-tale reaction shot, a vital visual plot clue, or a brilliant cut-in.
A must watch film!! A must own!!
Nightcrawler is bad and not in a good way.
A colossal pos!!
It was well acted…. no doubt. But, it started out on a pace to a great movie and then kinda plateaued… just didn’t really go anywhere. I was happy that all the reviews talking about how sicko it was were exaggerated. It was dark and Gllenhaal was definitely a ghoul. But, not as bad as I was expecting… you know the kind of movie that watching with your wife or girlfriend ruins any chance of sex that night. The Challenger scenes were good and the driving was cool. That’s all I’ve got. Rent this movie if you’re down to it….. but don’t expect the 95% Tomato meter to mean much (par for the course these days).
