About the Movie

Writer Director Hal Hartley takes a humorous and satirical look at a society concerned only with instant gratification and voyeuristic sensationalism. Disgusted with human evolution, a foul-mouthed Monster (Robert Burke) kills anyone who crosses his path. When news crew sent to investigate the Monster disappears, a guileless young woman (Sarah Polley) dispatched to follow up on the story befriends the Monster and becomes his only hope in ending his life of misery.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The script kicks in, and Mr. Hartley's distended pace and foot-dragging rhythms follow. – Elvis Mitchell, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Rotten: Much as I value independence in art, it's possible for a filmmaker to crawl so far onto his own wavelength that he loses touch with everything else. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, Sep 7, 2011

Rotten: Plodding, peevish and gimmicky. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Nov 24, 2006

Rotten: Flaccid drama and exasperatingly slow journey. – Kirk Honeycutt, Hollywood Reporter, Oct 30, 2006

Outstanding

Tired of the usual spew? This is a total fantasy-based, comedic, romantic and unpredictable tale with outstanding acting and chemistry between the two leads. As a movie director, it’s one of my favorites to watch after a long day on set and I often reference it.
