Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: There's much to admire in "Nocturnal Animals," including Mr. Ford's ambition, but too often it feels like the work of an observant student.
Fresh: Tom Ford hits it out of the park with a stunning film noir that resonates with ghostly, poetic terror. Don't overthink what Ford has so cunningly crafted. Surrender to it.
Fresh: [Ford] invests a tricky narrative juggling act with an intensity of human feeling that is the opposite of skin-deep. He tears through the veil of slick, self-admiring style that has both unlocked and at times obscured his very real merits as an artist.
Fresh: It's a tale bluntly told that arouses intense, evanescent emotion and then leaves you haunted, long afterward, by provocative but arguably answerable questions.
This movie is awful. Extremely overrated. Gyllenhaal has done much better in previous movies like the extremely underrated Nightcrawler, but does not stand out in this film. Michael Shannon is great, but he's always the best actor in any movie he is in.
Don't watch this movie. It's stressful, to be stressful. It's artistic to the point where this film is without substance. It's a film that tries too hard, but gets nowhere. It's incredibly over hyped.
maybe it's just me
i dunno. maybe i just don't get this kind of film. it felt unnecessarily dark, pointless and full of unfinished edges. i get--i think--what he was trying to do, but i didn't find it brilliant or entertaining. i generally don't like dark, hopeless, dismal plots, though. there might be some nugget of amazingness that i wouldn't get. if you want to walk away feeling icky and not entertained, try it. would have given it one star, but i like the lead actors and thought they performed well.
THE BEST FILM OF 2016
If Hitchcock and Almodóvar had a cinematic baby, it might feel a lot like Tom Ford's NOCUTURNAL ANIMALS. This film is a beautiful yet grotesque thriller with great peformances, costumes, style, and score.
