About the Movie
A successful Los Angeles art-gallery owner's idyllic life is marred by the constant traveling of her handsome second husband. While he is away, she is shaken by the arrival of a manuscript written by her first husband, who she has not seen in years. Rotten: There's much to admire in "Nocturnal Animals," including Mr. Ford's ambition, but too often it feels like the work of an observant student.
Fresh: Tom Ford hits it out of the park with a stunning film noir that resonates with ghostly, poetic terror. Don't overthink what Ford has so cunningly crafted. Surrender to it.
Fresh: [Ford] invests a tricky narrative juggling act with an intensity of human feeling that is the opposite of skin-deep. He tears through the veil of slick, self-admiring style that has both unlocked and at times obscured his very real merits as an artist.
Fresh: It's a tale bluntly told that arouses intense, evanescent emotion and then leaves you haunted, long afterward, by provocative but arguably answerable questions.
Story within a story of a flashback-ish... thing.
I liked this movie. At first I thought Gyllenhaal and Michael Shannon were overacting, but their parts are in this fictional story she is reading, which is based off of their history, so it fits. There are some vague bits where you are phasing from this fictional story with Gyllenhaal, to Amy Adams in the present, to her flashbacks as a couple with Gyllenhaal, but it works. It sounds complex, but it all pays off in the very last scene.
This has easily become one of my favorite movies. I can see where some people might find it confusing or uninteresting but I LOVED it. I thought it was so unique and had great acting. Especially from Aaron Taylor Johnson. It's one of those movies that makes you think afterwards, which is refreshing.
A MODERN LOVE STORY
Beautiful film about true love and what it means to do what is best.
