Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Novitiate is an intriguing if somewhat opaque movie, a feverish testament to the long reach and hard limits of faith. – Leah Greenblatt, Entertainment Weekly, Oct 27, 2017

Fresh: A stirring, soulful convent drama from first-time director Maggie Betts features Melissa Leo in an Oscar-worthy performance as Mother Superior. The film is a potent provocation shot through with grit and grace. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Oct 27, 2017

Fresh: It says everything about the effective subtlety of Betts' writing and of the performances it inspired that much of what we know of the characters is rarely if ever stated. – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle, Nov 9, 2017

Fresh: It's well worth seeing ... not least for the ways it conveys the profound intensity of religious devotion and the costs such devotion can exact. – Ty Burr, Boston Globe, Nov 9, 2017

Put This On Demand

Great thought provoking movie. These are the type of movies that should go On Demand when they're released. A hidden treasure.

Sacrifice that's all they ask of you

I'm not always understanding of religious terror delivered from the top down, but this film made it easier. Ancient rituals best left in the past where the public wasn't as enlightened as it is today. This film helps clear the air in a strange way. I found myself not surprised but a little saddened that giving more freedom to women but not freeing them is always sad. The acting in this movie is special and the script uplifting considering the story being told! Loved it!

Excellent insight into the church and becoming a nun.

That was an excellent movie! It was really well done in that it told the story of being a nun from the perspective of not just a novice but from that of experienced nuns of varying levels as well. Unfortunately, the catholic church always finds a way to disappoint just as they did in the cases of these nuns.
