Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The problem with "Nymphomaniac: Volume II" lies not in its display of erect penises and reddened buttocks, but rather in its dull narrative and overworked ideas. – A.O. Scott, New York Times, Apr 3, 2014

Fresh: A notch more watchable than Volume I. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, Apr 4, 2014

Rotten: Von Trier is such a masterful filmmaker that every new project comes on with the expectation and air of a totalizing masterwork. "Nymphomaniac: Volume II" creates the unsated sensation of having too much and wanting more. – Mark Olsen, Los Angeles Times, Apr 4, 2014

Fresh: "Vol. I" works. "Vol. II" works you over, and von Trier likes it like that. – Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune, Apr 3, 2014

vol II is even more raw than vol I - see it!

Altogether enjoyable

If you ignore the title and just watch it, as a story, as a biography, as an autobiography. Looking a life from the inside out instead of the outside in. seeing this person lay themself baer. To me it became like a book I didn't want to put down, I just had to watch them both back to back, extraordinary. I thoroughly enjoyed it

[for both I & II] Not since “Pulp Fiction”…

…has a mainstream film tackled veiled Christian themes so effectively. If you think the film turns on a dime in the end, you’re not hearing it (though where it ultimately stands is perhaps clearer in the director’s cut).
