Plot Summary

In this sixth 007 adventure, Secret Agent James Bond (George Lazenby) again confronts the infamous arch-villain and SPECTRE chief Ernst Stavro Blofeld (Telly Savalas), who is planning a biological-warfare assault on the entire world by introducing sterility spores into the world's agricultural supplies. Bond meets his match in a beautiful, intelligent and enchanting woman, Tracy Draco, whom he had rescued from an attempted suicide by drowning. Through Tracy's international Mafioso-ish father, Bond gains entry into Blofeld's incredible Swiss-mountain stronghold to foil Blofeld's attempt to rule the world...but at great cost. Based on the novel by Ian Fleming.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: What are Bond's problems now? They're too numerous, as usual, to hold the constant attention of anyone other than a charter member of Her Majesty's Secret Service. – A.H. Weiler, New York Times, Oct 13, 2008

Fresh: Film of break-neck physical excitement and stunning visual attractions in which George Lazenby replaced Sean Connery as James Bond. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: It offers supremely satisfying versions of all the conventions we expect from the series ... and then it does the one thing you don't expect a James Bond movie to do: It breaks your heart. – Charles Taylor, Salon.com, Jan 11, 2007

Fresh: Even featuring an inferior 007, On Her Majesty's Secret Service is a landmark change-of-pace, and an exhilarating and affecting piece of entertainment. – James Berardinelli, ReelViews, Jun 10, 2008

One of the Better Bond Movies

Lazenby in reality was a jerk, which is why he played Bond only once. Though he, himself quit, he discovered that his personality wasn't suited to acting as this was his first role aside from commercials. That said, He owns the character well and is much like dalton in his portrayal. This movie should have been filmed before you only live twice, as the books were written in sequence Thunderball, On Her Majesty's Sectret Service, You Only Live Twice. Thus the the beginning makes no sense as Blofeld doesn't recognize him even though they just battled in the previous film. Anyway, It is a good effort and very much like the fleming book. He was a fool to walk away and has since said himself the same. Diana Rigg is perfect for her role as is Telly Savalas. The Director is a first timer and the editor of the previous bond films. Enjoyable

Often overlooked Bond film- GREAT STUFF!

The lull between Sean Connery's departure and this film were intolerable it seems...the hype and mystery over who would play Bond added to the excitement at the time. Teaser posters were even released with the face of the actor hidden!

So they went all out in every area, and the film does not disappoint! Telly Savalas as the villian, gorgeous Diana Rigg was the love interest, all the supporting cast returned, and George Lazenby does a good job playing Bond. The scenery was lush, the music hands down the best ever, and the action and heartache (spoiler!) makes it the best Bond film ever, IMHO.

BTW, the ski chase scenes are out of this world, great choreography and stunts!

The Best Bond film

It's a disappointing fact that the plot in most 007 films based on the Ian Fleming novels deviate significantly from the story penned by the author. On Her Majesty's Secret Service is one of the exceptions. The film matches the novel 99%. On Her Majesty's Secret Service is arguably the best Bond storry penned by Fleming and the tragic ending in both film and novel has no match in any of the other Bond works. The film gets unfairly panned by critics because it did not feature Sean Connery who did not want to do another Bond film at the time. The irony is that George Lazenby's one and only performance as James Bond most closely matched Fleming's description of agent 007 in terms of his mannerisms, style, behavior, look, etc. Diana Rigg is the one of the best Bond girls and gives an outstanding and serious performance as Taresa "Tracy" Draco. Telly Savalas was by far the best Blofeld, unlike the lampooned "Dr. Evil" style Blofeld portrayed by Donald Pleasence in the film "You Only Live Twice" or the awful tongue in cheek performance given by Charles Gray in "Diamonds Are Forever"--would you seriously believe that this guy's cross dressing, proper English gentelman, smoking with an extention is capable of world domination?
