Sisters Liz, Miranda (Elizabeth Banks of TV's 30 ROCK, ZACK & MIRI MAKE A PORNO, ROLE MODELS) and Natalie (Zooey Deschanel of (500) DAYS OF SUMMER, YES MAN, TV's THE NEW GIRL), have an idiot for a brother. Perennially upbeat Ned (Paul Rudd of I LOVE YOU MAN, DINNER FOR SCHMUCKS, 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN), an erstwhile organic farmer, is utterly lacking in common sense. After his girlfriend dumps him and boots him off their farm, Ned turns to his sisters, who once again come to his rescue, each taking a turn housing their troublemaker sibling. Ned's unfailing commitment to honesty creates more than a few messes in their comfortable routines, but as the sisters' lives begin to unravel, they come to realize that maybe, in his steadfast optimism, Ned isn't such an idiot after all.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: It's a warm, intelligent and highly contemporary comedy with just the right amount of edge, a terrific ensemble cast and a big, fuzzy golden retriever ready to knock you down and lick you like a giant lollipop.
Fresh: Rudd brings color and dimension to a borderline-simpleton schlub who could have easily become a one-note cliche.
Fresh: Despite a pleasantly laid-back demeanor, you wish it would just get focused.
Rotten: Rudd has created a genuinely engaging character in the Candide-like Ned, but "Our Idiot Brother" gives him very little garden to cultivate.
More than a comedy...
I think people completely misunderstood this film. Just because Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks & Adam Scott were in this movie, doesn't mean it is just a comedy. I love that this movie has a little bit of everything and that the characters felt real. Great movie overall!
A SURPRISINGLY CHARMING COMEDY!
To be honest, I've never really been a huge fan of Paul Rudd. Sure, the man can be pretty funny at times, but he's managed to star as the same type of character in almost every one of his movies: the awkward, straight-faced best friend who's usually known for being the voice of reason and having little to no personality. However, once I saw "My Idiot Brother", my whole perception of Rudd's acting abilities took a complete 180. With this film, not only does he prove that he's more than just a one-dimensional actor, but he also brings life to one of the most engaging and lovable characters portrayed in any R-rated comedy. Rudd stars as Ned, a perennially upbeat and utterly naive organic farmer who becomes extremely dependent on his three sisters for his housing situations after being dumped by his overbearing girlfriend. His generally optimistic outlook on life and huge, unintentional familial screw-ups are pretty much what make him so outrageously annoying, yet surprisingly relatable at the same time. The supporting cast is also a total laugh riot. Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, and Emily Mortimer are perfectly cast as Ned's polar opposite sisters faced with having to deal with their brother's childlike antics. Aside from the amazing acting, the dialogue is clever and intelligent, the story is well structured and smoothly played out, and the overall low-budget quality of the film makes it all the more charming and believable. In my opinion, this is Rudd's best movie by far. His character is so genuine and hilarious, it'd be impossible not to like him. All in all, if you love a good R-rated comedy that's as sweet as it is raunchy, you won't be disappointed with "My Idiot Brother".
One of the best.
One of the best movies for every actor in this movie. People don't understand that this is more than a comedy, it was just a movie about enjoying the life that you lead no matter what gets thrown at you. This isn't a movie that is just about some lesbian getting pregnant when she has a one night stand. And this isn't a movie on adults that are poor partners. No this is simply a movie about looking at life through a different window each morning so that you see all that this world has to offer, not just the same window with the same view.Paul Rudd stepped outside of his usual character in this one and he took on the role of someone that we all have inside of us, but far to many are too shy to show. This is an excellent movie one that we all should see and learn from. Don't bash what you don't understand.
