Out of the Shadows Review
If you are to take away any lesson away from Out of the Shadows, it's to never bring your work home with you. That's what Detective Eric Hughes and his wife learn the hard way when the source of the murders he's investigating turns out to be manifesting from his very own home- and it's after his unborn daughter. The murder mystery twist on the exorcism/paranormal activity subgenre sets this film apart from its other demonic counterparts. Familial themes such as anticipating childbirth, trusting your spouse, and living in a new home are all extrmely prominent and adds the necessary tension and suspense to your viewing experience. The cast pulls their weight for the most part, with the standouts being Kendal Rae as the pregnant Katrina Hughes and and Lisa Chappell as Linda Dee, the rebellious daughter of the local priest. And with the Freddy Krueger-esque looking antagonist, this demon proves to be a formidable and terrifying adversary throughout the film's duration. If exorcism films are your go-to horror flick for a dark and stromy Friday night, definitely give Out of the Shadows a shot.
Out of the Shadows is an ominous film that presents paranoia in a whole new light. Unaware of it’s dark past, a young expecting couple purchase an old house in hopes of turning it into a home for their new family. The couple soon learns that the house was once a midwifery that practiced satanic rites and the mother-to-be is convinced that the house is haunted. The use of eerie music and short glimpses of shadowed figures gives into the conception that the house is indeed haunted creating an overwhelming sensation of suspense and tension for the viewers. The film takes an unexpected turn and proposes the idea of hypomania. The film allures to this notion by mentioning that psychosis was previously relevant in the couple’s lives. Lisa Chappel’s performance is quite amazing in the way she keeps the audience questioning whether what she was experiencing was reality or an illusion. Director Dee McLachlan does a phenomenal job in fusing together psychological and horror elements to create a truly unpredictable film. This chilling thriller is definitely a must watch.
