Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: A movie of unexpected pleasures. – Vincent Canby, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: While there are several mile-wide plot holes and one key under-developed main character, the film emerges as a tight, intriguing old-fashioned drama that gives audiences a hero worth rooting for. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: The failure of director-writer Peter Hyams to put any weight whatever behind the moral issues (crude as they are) makes this merely violent nonsense. – Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Because both dialogue and direction are none too exciting, one's tired eyes wander endlessly over the space base sets. – Time Out, Aug 16, 2007

Great Movie!!

I won't go into details but I will say that this is a good, tense Sci-Fi movie. Well done for its time. The basic premis is "High Noon" in outer space. (Nuff Said)

Outland is from 1981, not 1997

This is a decent sci-fi movie from the era of Alien and Blade Runner. The iTunes store says it is from 1997. This is a mistake. Rent it if you want to see an overlooked classic sci-fi thriller. It's not the best script ever, but you do get some prime Sean Connery in the deal.

Really Underrated Film

First off, would someone at iTunes PLEASE get the soundtrack for this film? It's really one of Jerry Goldsmith's better works, in my opinion. I used to own it on vinyl, and I know it was released on CD back in the 1990's, so it IS out there.

The film itself is really good. The plot is "High Noon" in space for the second half. Great performances by Sean Connery and the late Peter Boyle. Good enough to own, but if you're skeptical about just outright buying it, rent it. It's a taught, fun film.
