About the Movie
From director Joe Wright comes "Pan," a live-action feature presenting a wholly original adventure about the beginnings of the beloved characters created by J.M. Barrie. Peter is a mischievous 12-year-old boy with an irrepressible rebellious streak, but in the bleak London orphanage where he has lived his whole life those qualities do not exactly fly. Then one incredible night, Peter is whisked away from the orphanage and spirited off to a fantastical world of pirates, warriors and fairies called Neverland. There, he finds amazing adventures and fights life-or-death battles while trying to uncover the secret of his mother, who left him at the orphanage so long ago, and his rightful place in this magical land. Teamed with the warrior Tiger Lily and a new friend named James Hook, Peter must defeat the ruthless pirate Blackbeard to save Neverland and discover his true destiny-to become the hero who will forever be known as Peter Pan.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: A hectic and labored attempt to supply the boy who never grew up with an origin story.
Rotten: This joyless, juiceless Pan is a theme-park ride from hell.
Rotten: Sometimes, classic stories don't benefit from re-imaginings or embellishments. Sometimes, it's not worth knowing what happened before the fun starts. Sometimes, such mysteries are best left alone.
Rotten: A botched interpretation of the classic story that trades spectacle for coherence.
Even though a lot of people didn't like this movie, I really liked it!
My complaints about this movie are almost completely overshadowed by its beautiful soundtrack, a true sense of fun and adventure, and wonderful special effects that will inspire one's imagination
Despite its mixed and critical reviews in the press, Pan is an endearing and enjoyable movie for those that can watch it with the right perspective. Viewers that bring preconceived notions and expectations based upon other Pan movies and the “superhero” genre into the theater will not enjoy an unbiased experience. As for the controversy, insisting that Tiger Lily be filled by a native american actress is ironically racist and inhibits viewers from the possibilities of a more open interpretation of the character (a careful examination of the whole of the tribal villagers quickly dispels any conclusion that they are all whitewashed). And, finally, Pan is a children’s movie; if you cannot read Narnia books without grimacing or being bored, then Pan may not be for you. If you can take it for what it is, Pan delivers a beautiful and moving story coupled with quality acting and stunning sets and CGI.
Pan packs all the necessities of quality, mythical high fantasy into a cohesive and tight plot. We have the unprepared and innocent hero, the conniving and pitiful villain, the characteristic side characters who believe in the hero long before he does, and the comical “townspeople” in the form of fellow miners, orphans, natives, pirates, and pixies. Blackbeard is intriguingly psychological and leads the audience to both pity him and despise him. The movie reaches dramatic climax when Peter finally sacrifices his doubt, saving a friend and discovering his potential. Endowed with new power, Peter finally overthrows his enemies and, as the movie closes, ushers in a new chapter in Neverland’s history.
As with any film, all spectators will walk away with things they wish they could change in the movie. Taken at face value, however, Pan is a captivating and convincing story with a powerful soundtrack and a cast of high caliber.
