Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Mostly, it plays like a overlong prologue for the already-in-the-works PA5. Here's hoping this is just the tension-racking lull before the next big scream. – Adam Markovitz, Entertainment Weekly, Oct 18, 2012

Rotten: There's a point at which movies become only merchandise, and the Paranormal franchise may be heading for that nexus, that nadir. – Richard Corliss, TIME Magazine, Oct 18, 2012

Rotten: The franchise that capitalized on the found-footage craze has gotten lost. – Claudia Puig, USA Today, Oct 18, 2012

Rotten: Screenwriter Christopher Landon, along with co-directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, make a truly lame attempt at establishing a supernatural mythology to explain all this ... – Chuck Wilson, Village Voice, Oct 19, 2012

Saying it's bad is an understatement.

Let me start off by saying that I am a huge fan of the first three Paranormal Activity movies. When I first saw the trailer to this one though, I thought that it would either be terrible or great. Sadly, it was not that second thought. Just like all the others, there are scenes in the trailer that are not shown in the movie itself. But unlike the other movies, those scenes wouldn't have been enough to save this one. The things you see in this installment are basically things you've seen before, so they aren't scary nor exciting. Ooo, a chair moved, real scary! And this movie relies heavily on jump scares. And they aren't even good jump scares! Remember in the third movie when Julie popped out of the closet with a mask on (it was somewhere near the beginning)? Stuff like that is basically all you get in this movie. The biggest thing I hated about this movie is that it follows completely new people. All of the other three movies followed people in the same family, but in this one, we follow a completely new (and stupid) family that just never gets the hint that something paranormal is going on. And Katie has very minimal scenes. There was absolutely NO relevance in this movie, especially when it came to a certain character (I won't spoil anything, but if you've seen it, you know who I'm talking about). Why couldn't this movie have followed Katie and "Hunter" alone, or at least the cult that was seen in the third movie? The writers and directors of this movie (yes, there are two directors, you think they could've done a little better) tried to make this movie seem like it had something to do with the rest of the movies, but utterly failed at it. I'm sorry, but this movie screws up the other three movies. If you're a die-hard Paranormal Activity fan like I am, go ahead and rent this because there's obviously going to be a Paranormal Activity 5, probably a sixth installment, and most likely more after that. But be warned: this is one of the worst movies that came out this year, if not the worst.

There's a time when all once-good franchises must come to an end. For the "Paranormal Activity" saga, now is that time. And this is coming from an ardent fan of the series. I honestly don't think I've ever seen a more insulting horror movie of this caliber since last summer's "The Apparition". It's so bad, it literally has no ending. The directors just make one up at the spot, and it basically feels like a giant middle finger to everyone sat through the entire flick just to get to that point. To make matters worse, this sequel introduces us to an unbelievably insipid family that continuously turns a blind eye to the paranormal activity going on until the final thirty minutes, and by that time, no one even cares about what's even happening anymore. So unless you wanna watch an annoying new cast of characters experience all the same scare tactics you've seen a million times before, just skip this lame addition to the horror series and watch one of the other "PA" flicks instead (particularly the first and third ones). Trust me, this movie isn't worth all the brain cells you'll end up losing if you do choose to see it.

Great !!!

Maybe it's not so good like the other 3, but i'm still freaking out while watching it ! Thank you directors
