About the Movie
Kim Wayans, Adepero Oduye, Aasha Davis and Charles Parnell star in Dee Rees’s inspiring film that critics hail is “Vibrantly alive! Potently moving and heartfelt!” (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone). Seventeen-year-old Alike (pronounced ah-lee-kay) lives with her parents and younger sister in Brooklyn's Fort Greene neighborhood. She has a flair for poetry, and is quietly embracing her identity as a lesbian. But whenever Alike's development becomes a topic of discussion at home, her parents’ already strained marriage is pushed to the breaking point. Wondering how much she can confide in her family, Alike strives to get through adolescence with grace, humor, and tenacity – sometimes succeeding, sometimes not, but always moving forward.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: In her fearless, world-here-I-am! debut Pariah, writer-director Dee Rees demonstrates, with simplicity and verve, that there's no substitute for authenticity.
Fresh: Pariah is a tender, sporadically goofy, yet candid examination of emergent identity.
Fresh: Rees packs a lot into a simple narrative, and only rarely overpacks.
Fresh: "Pariah'' really feels like something rare.
Go see. Heres why
Finally I am able to see a film that has a urban African American female as the main character that deals with her sexuality automatically makes this movie outstanding for me. I did enjoy the cinematography, the innocence element, the acting, the writing, the development of characters, the love and the heartbreak which all made the film human and something I can relate to. I think this is a good foundation for more to come in black lesbian films. I also thought the film left alot of things open and up for interpretation which is not always a good thing for me. I'd also like to add i did alot of research on the film before actually seeing it and the reviews had a positive sting to them I kind of built this movie up and seeing the full film now i was slightly let down. I'm a romance addict and i would liked to see the development of the love interest a little more but that's the only bad thing i can say. I would recommend this film to anyone whether be gay straight or any other classification. it's a great coming out story and i think it makes a easy conversational point for anyone that is trying to come out.
Very Real & Touching....
What I liked most about this movie, is it was REAL...(acting and storyline)....kudos to Kim Wayans for an outstanding performance. I would recommended this to anyone to watch....straight or gay.
From beginning to end it had my attention and my heart
