Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: There's a near mathematical logic to the scenario and the cruelty is compounded by class.
Fresh: The sardonic rhetoric may be laid on a little heavily at times, but the movie is blunt and scornfully brilliant.
Fresh: Both a terrifying, grim look at battle and an excruciatingly tense courtroom thriller. Together, it's a devastating indictment of war as conducted by opportunists and liars.
Fresh: Paths of Glory is all about that greatest of all movie subjects: power.
A brilliant anti-war movie. The reality of the bewlidering arrogance, stupidity, and fatal carelessness of a General Staff (regardless of nationality) who were, almost to a man, at least 20-30 miles from the trenches. One comment to a reviewer ("400barz"), who determined that the movie portrayed "individuals psychologically unsuited to the realities of war"!!!! Individuals who were for YEARS were subject to orders that would put them directly in the pathes of machine guns, who for years had to put up with the unbearable mud, waterlogged trenches, rats, who bloated on corpses, were the size of small dogs, poison gas, and death!! As this is the 90th anniversary of the Armistice I can safely assume that "400barz" did not serve in the trenches, and perhaps should therefore be more understanding that all human beings come to a point where horror overwhelms the senses - which by the way is NOT the individual tale of the soldiers involved in the movie. Needed to point out that the REALITY of the war IS depicted in the movie!
Stanley Kubrick's Masterpiece
Stanley Kubrick in my opinion is the greatest filmmaker of all time, I can't say I've seen one movie from him that I've truly been dissapointed by. I had mixed feelings about this one at first. It honestly ranks pretty low in comparison to his later fims, however it has a decent storyline and one of Kirk Douglas' best performances in his carrer. Sadly this movie is overall has negitive perspective on the subject of war, getting into depth of man's instablity by being afraid of war. Stanley never quoted this as an anti- war movie but a anti authorian ignorance film. Kubrick here gets into the instability regarding the soldiers psychological perspective of things, as he does the contrary in his Vietnam era war film 1987's Full Metal Jacket. This ranks nothing short of a well made war film invoving the emotions of individuals who are simply psychologically unstable regarding the reality of war. Kirk Douglas plays the key role model of a man who will do everything in his power to support all justice regarding corruption within authority (hence the strong liberalism in the film). Bottom line is that this ranks nothing short of a Kubrickan movie covering facinating psychological depth regarding human minds and behavior.
