Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: "Philadelphia" mostly succeeds in being forceful, impassioned and moving, sometimes even rising to the full range of emotion that its subject warrants. But too often, even at its most assertive, it works in safely predictable ways. – Janet Maslin, New York Times, Oct 24, 2011

Fresh: [An] extremely well-made message picture about tolerance, justice and discrimination is pitched at mainstream audiences, befitting its position as the first major Hollywood film to directly tackle the disease. – Todd McCarthy, Variety, Oct 24, 2011

Fresh: Philadelphia may not be the film Demme's fans expect--its emotionalism is unfiltered by cool. But it has the power to open more than a few blinkered hearts. – David Ansen, Newsweek, Mar 13, 2015

Rotten: This AIDS courtroom drama is so pumped full of nitrous oxide, you could get your teeth drilled on it. – Desson Thomson, Washington Post, Sep 9, 2002

I won't say this is the best movie ever however it is indeed a must see. Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington are spectacular, and the story is incredible, also the music in there is amazing I recomend you check out Philadelphia and Streets of Philadelphia in the soundtrack.

This is a really great vehicle for all the stars. Dezell Washignton was outstanding as was Tom Hanks and the supporting cast. I have this as part of my collection and would have purchased it if iTunes had given me the option. I am really getting to the point of not wanting to open these tabs because of that. The company needs to rethink this policy. While it may allow greater consumer options, I doubt that but..., I dislike the lack of choice.

A movie that should be watched over and over again.

Gays are not to be scorned. Why? Because their people to. If you did not know or think of them as that, then you are sick and need help. I am not gay. I am straight. What makes me sick is when someone is homophobic (sorry if i spelled that wrong.) Homophobes, i want to ask you this: Why you be hatin'. Why? Because they like their own gender. They are no, I MEAN NO, different then us other then they like people of their own sex. If whoever is reading this is homophobic (again, sorry if I spelled that wrong.), change your veiws right now. If you agree, click yes. Now then, I shall decribe this beautiful film. I love love love love this film. Denzel Washington is favorite actor and he and Tom Hanks were right to star in this sad but hugely moving film. Denzel plays a homophobe lawyer who agrees to defend Hanks' Andrew Becket, a gay lawyer with AIDS who sues his firm because he feels they fired him based on his lethal diease. The ending is so so sad but a ending you accept fully because, hey, he has AIDS. (I did not ruin anything. To say i ruined the ending would be like saying there's fight scene in the matrix triology.) I love this movie and hope you will too.
