About the Movie
Judi Dench stars in the story of Philomena Lee, mother to a boy conceived out of wedlock and given up for adoption. Nearly 50 years later, Philomena meets Martin Sixsmith (Steve Coogan), a former BBC reporter looking for his next big story. Together, they embark on a journey to locate her long lost son. As the pieces of the puzzle come together, the unlikely travel companions form a comic and heartwarming friendship. Based on the 2009 investigative book by Martin Sixsmith ‘The Lost Child of Philomena Lee’, the film adaptation has been hailed as “a triumph for Judi Dench. Brilliant. A performance of grace, nuance and cinematic heroism.” (Mary Corliss, TIME MAGAZINE)

Fresh: We wouldn't care about any of this if the performances were weak. But both actors find complexity and depth.
Fresh: Go beyond the manner of its telling and you find a story of cruelty and evil, of shocking acts committed under a veneer of civility and sanctity.
Fresh: "Philomena" is a tearjerker of rare honesty and craft.
Fresh: At its core, this clever, wrenching, profound story underscores the tenacity of faith in the face of unfathomable cruelty.
‘Philomena’ is a wonderful movie experience
“Philomena” has already won multiple awards at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival this year, and created tons of critical buzz in the process. Judi Dench and Steve Coogan have been praised for their fantastic performances, and deservingly so. Not only is this one of the most fun and interesting movies of the year, it also managed to surprise me in every way imaginable.
The film centers on Philomena (Judi Dench), a woman whose son was taken away from her decades ago after she became pregnant and was forced to live in a convent. Martin (Steve Coogan), a struggling journalist, gets wind of her story and decides to help her search for her long-lost son. Their journey together is fascinating, with a fantastic balance of comedy and drama.
With breathtaking cinematography, and Oscar-worthy performances from the leads, I couldn’t recommend this film enough. Rated PG-13 for language, “Philomena” is a wonderful movie experience.
This was well done and the acting was very believable. Some of our past practices, clothed in propriety, were in practice quite harsh. The story pulls you in, educates you, and helps put a face to a young woman's guilt and suffering -- all because of the time she grew up in.
Great movie, highly recomended
One of the best movies I have seen in recent years. Great story, perfect acting, a lot of things to think about.
