Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Thin, flavorless and heavily garnished with contrivance, this odd couple comedy serves up little but stale whimsy. – Nathan Lee, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Rotten: For all its quirky touches, the comedy cleaves to formula in its depiction of how they challenge and change each other. – Sheri Linden, Hollywood Reporter, Jun 24, 2010

I Wish There Had Been Movies Like This When I Was a Teenager!

I was a fat kid. I was a fat teenager. I am a fat adult. Not "only in my mind" fat like 99% of the world, but actually fat, so when a movie about a fat girl comes along, I am bound to like it. I might be tempted to give this 4 stars, but NO...if they are daring enough to let a fat girl be the main character, I'll give them 5 stars! And, the movie is good. The acting is fantastic. I don't know if this movie is drama or comedy, but I think it succeeds in both. It is kind of a day in the life of this girl...who happens to be fat too. She is quirky and funny and smart, but not a poor hapless pathetic girl...even though kids in her school might think so. It is kind of a coming of age story too. Seriously, if I could have seen this movie when I was 14 before I starved myself crazy I think it might have changed me in some positive way. I just watched it, but I want to watch it again. And, this is great, because it shows that not all men are evil bastards all of the time, that being an adult DOES make a difference, and that fat people are not just blobs of goo to poke fun at and laugh at. Fat grrls are cool and it is great to see a movie about a cool fat grrl!

This is a great feel good movie reminiscent of the Brat Pack era; one of those films meant to be watched in the middle of the day. The scenes are gentle with typical adolescent dialogue, making the characters very real and relatable. This film does a great job at avoiding stereotypical and artificial situations, meanwhile Mark Christopher does an excellent job and character development and by the end, you are left with that proverbial good taste in your mouth.

Makes you laugh and cry...

This movie takes an ordinary girl and gives her an amazing night out with an unlikely person. Ethan Embry is amazing, and I have never seen such a real look into the life of a teenager. Not all teenagers are pretty, popular and perfect. This gives a great look into what life can be like for an outsider who wants to look in.
