About the Movie

After a spectacular crash-landing on an uncharted planet, brash astronaut Leo Davidson (Mark Wahlberg) finds himself trapped in a savage world where talking apes dominate the human race. Desperate to find a way home, Leo must evade the invincible gorilla army led by ruthless General Thade (Tim Roth) and his most trusted warrior, Attar (Michael Clarke Duncan). Now the pulse-pounding race is on to reach a sacred temple that may hold the shocking secrets of mankind's past - and the last hope for it's salvation! Based on Pierre Boulle's classic novel "Planet of the Apes," the premise for this film has become one of the most recognized and provocative concepts in the canon of science fiction literature and cinema. Visionary filmmaker Tim Burton (Batman, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow) has taken Boulle's basic idea and built upon it a uniquely envisioned journey to an incredible upside-down world.

Fresh: The movie can be both a gas and distant, a toy sealed in its unbreakable box. – Elvis Mitchell, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Rotten: Call it a letdown, worsened by the forces of shoddy screenwriting. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Nov 24, 2006

Fresh: There's one reason to see Tim Burton's flawed, somewhat declawed but often amusing do-over of Planet of the Apes. The apes. – Susan Wloszczyna, USA Today, Jun 18, 2002

Rotten: The movie fails to rise to the high emotional and imaginative standards Burton has set for himself in such films as Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood and the first two Batman movies. – Kirk Honeycutt, Hollywood Reporter, Jun 24, 2010

Good remake

The original film from 1968 had a greater impact because of the superb ending written by Rod Serling (creator of The Twilight Zone and Night Gallery). This version has an ending that is more consistent with the original novel by Pierre Boulle. Some are confused by the ending in this movie. Well, true sci-fi is supposed to make you think, make you ponder what could be as you leave the cinema (or turn off your DVD player).
