Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: None of it is especially credible or engaging.
Rotten: Playing for Keeps takes place in a tonally incoherent universe, constantly shifting between rom-com farce and mawkish family drama.
Rotten: At some point you hope [Butler] will find a movie that will give him the right material to make hearts truly beat faster.
Rotten: I'll long be haunted by Dennis Quaid's manic performance as a palm-greasing dad who seems to be under the influence of bath salts ...
Surprisingly hard to watch
I thought I'd at least enjoy watching this but it was difficult to sit through. Generally I can find something I like in a "rom-com" but not in this one. Jessica Biel looked terrible, Catherine Zeta-Jones' character was typical and over the top but worst of all, the story was not just formulaic at best, it didn't even flow. If you couldn't figure out what was going to happen (you'd have to be asleep for that to happen), you'd be scratching your head. Save your money and wait for cable.
The movie was good! Definitely worth the 5🌟's
