About the Movie
Rigorously trained from an early age by a perfectionist instructor, Polina (played by Anastasia Shevtsova, a professional dancer who has performed with Saint Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre) is a promising classical ballet dancer. She is just about to join the prestigious Bolshoi Ballet when she discovers contemporary dance, a revelation that throws everything into question on a profound level. Diverting from her plan, she leaves all her exacting preparation behind and moves to France to work with famous choreographer Liria Elsaj (played by Academy Award®-winner Juliette Binoche who has danced with London-based dancer/choreographer Akram Khan).

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: If this film's directors, Valerie Muller and the French choreographer Angelin Preljocaj, don't offer much overt material on Polina's inner life, it's because they don't have to: the point of Polina, and this movie, is that her dancing is her being.
Rotten: The film is intriguing on the surface, but the scenes have no interior hum, because they haven't been conceived psychologically.
Fresh: Stubbornly uninvolving for long stretches, but it can also be stirringly cinematic.
Fresh: In its quiet way Polina is a gender-reversed, fictional version of last year's Dancer.
Worth your time
Amazing movement in a gently-paced, coming-into-one's-own movie.
Best dance movie I have ever seen.
It's hard to describe in words something so visual. Some of the best dancing ever. This exemplefies why I love so many foreign movies, especially the French, who seem to have an unreal grasp on how to make an emotionally stunning movie.
