About the Movie
At a prestigious Northern California prep school, a campus activist (Carly Schroeder) and her intense relationship with a troubled rugby player (Stephen Brookins) triggers an all-out war between rival students. At turns humorous and savage, director Sean Nichols Lynch's debut feature is a searing tale of adolescence, heartbreak, and revenge.
Not your average high school drama
This movie is for the person who doesn't look back on their teenage years all that fondly. The characters are ones you know well - the jerk jock, the kid who wants to escape school and get on to his future, the "nice guy" who just manipulates women - but rather than being formulaic director/writer Sean Lynch gives them a darker turn.
Classified as a drama, this indie flick has more of a thriller's edge, particularly with the ominous soundtrack that hints at the dark underbelly of high school culture and young men's fetishizing desire for control over women. Great acting by the leads (especially Caleb, played by Ben Bellamy) and skillful direction makes up for some of the film's rougher edges.
Dead Poets Society + Cruel Intentions = Prep School
One part highfalutin’ classroom drama, one part scandalous psycho-sexual soap opera, and a sprinkling of rag-tag sports movie, Prep School is one crazy ride, with surprises and upended genre cliches at every turn. The acting is great too, with strong stuff from former Disney Channel star Carly Schroeder (Melina on Lizzie McGuire!) and newcomers Austin Scott and Ben Bellamy. 10/10
