An unhappy woman finds new love with her old boyfriend in this romantic comedy-drama from writer and director Edward Burns. Patti (Selma Blair) is a woman in her early thirties living in New York City. For years, she chased after her dream of becoming a successful novelist, but recently she's had to put writing on hold and is unhappily working in real estate. Patti's ennui isn't helped by the fact her marriage has fallen into a rut and neither she nor her husband are interested in one another anymore. When she was in college, Patti was in love with Brian (Patrick Wilson), and while Brian is fortunate enough to support himself writing crime fiction, he's smarting from the uncharitable reviews given to his latest and most personal work. One night, Patti is having dinner with her best friend Kate (Debra Messing) when she bumps into Brian, who is out with his friend Murph (Edward Burns), who in turn used to be involved with Kate. As the former lovers talk about their past and where life has taken them, Patti finds herself falling for Brian all over again, but both she and Brian are still dealing with the differences and insecurities that drove them apart years before.
Very moving and heartfelt
This is a great feel good film. You fall in love with the characters, and you can't help but hope for their success even when you know it's inevitable. This isn't a typical romance comedy. It's very witty, well-written, and inspiring. There are moments in the movie when you might lose yourself for a second and just stare in awe at the beautiful New York skylines. The sets and locations are very artistically depicted. You'll leave this with a sense of longing for NY when it's over. Great Film. Definitely worth a watch.
I enjoyed it
All of the actors turned in good performances. The writing was believable, the dialog natural and the settings in NYC great to look at. The one concern in a "slice of life" film such as this is finding the right balance of events to make the movie memorable. On one side the events of the movie are too low key and the result is boring, the other side the events are too much and it isn't believable. I think I would have liked to seen just a little bit more in Purple Violets, but I think that too little is better than too much. Impressive film. Enjoyed it. Interesting distribution method and I hope that it does well.
Movie was very good. Love the story; however it would have been much better without the nasty language. It would have been much more enjoyable without so much use of the F word. Other than than, it was worth watching.
