Plot Summary

Beecham House is abuzz. Rumor is that the home for retired musicians will soon play host to a new resident - a star. For Reginald Paget (Tom Courtenay of THE GOLDEN COMPASS), Wilfred Bond (Billy Connolly of BOONDOCK SAINTS, THE LAST SAMURAI) and Cecily Robson (Pauline Collins of ALBERT NOBBS), this sort of talk is par for the course at the gossipy home, but they're in for a shock when the new arrival turns out to be none other than their former singing partner, Jean Horton (Maggie Smith of DOWNTON ABBEY, GOSFORD PARK). Her subsequent career as a star soloist and the ego that accompanied it split up their long friendship and ended her marriage to Reggie, who takes the news of her arrival particularly hard. Can the passage of time heal old wounds? And will the famous quartet be able to patch up their differences in time for Beecham House's gala concert? Academy Award-Winner® Dustin Hoffman's directorial debut film.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Hoffman directs with elegance, allowing the denizens to be dignified, as well as adorable. We get a strong sense of each major character. – Claudia Puig, USA Today, Jan 24, 2013

Fresh: The film's scant plot plays second fiddle to Hoffman and Harwood's nuanced exploration of love so long unrequited. – Peter Debruge, Variety, Dec 22, 2013

Fresh: Dustin Hoffman's directing debut about retired musicians in the third act of their lives has a winning, classy charm for older audiences. – Deborah Young, Hollywood Reporter, Dec 22, 2013

Rotten: Always cute and breezy, "Quartet" often forgets that its protagonists are in a sobering stage of life, and that there's comedy to be found there as well. – Rafer Guzman, Newsday, Jan 24, 2013

Superb!

Another heartwarming charmer with Dame Maggie Smith and a great cast. If you love British humor and liked The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, you will, love this movie.

great!

absolutely LOVED it. story was good….acting was tremendous…..after all, maggie smith is in it. what more do you need? though all the other actors were equally enjoyable. if you liked "best exotic marigold hotel"….you will love this one. can't wait to watch it again.

I LOVE Maggie Smith but - SKIP IT

I was disappointed. I heard so many wonderful things about this picture. Sure it has a GREAT cast but the story really is so-so and the plot predictable. HOWEVER, I will see anything and everything the delightful Maggie Smith is in. She is FANTASTIC. Oh the other actors were great too - the story, for me just fell flat. And this picture was one of those that actually needed to ADD minutes as it abruptly ended. But I see I'm in the wrong here so - go ahead and watch it. Marigold Hotel - a movie I did not want to see was MUCH better.
