About the Movie

When Charlie Babbitt goes home to the Midwest for his estranged father's funeral, he learns not only that he's been cut out of his inheritance, but that he has a grown brother...Raymond...who has been sheltered almost all of his life in an East Coast institution for the developmentally disabled. Raymond is an autistic savant...a person who is severely limited in most mental areas but extremely gifted in others. After traveling to the institution, Charlie kidnaps Raymond but then finds that Raymond will only fly Qantas. So the two begin a long cross-country odyssey in their father's 1949 Buick Roadmaster convertible...a trip that will lead them to understanding and love, and for Charlie a kind of redemption.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: What no one can argue is that Rain Man is Cruise's quantum leap, so that it can be said unblushingly that he holds his own with the masterly Hoffman. – Sheila Benson, Los Angeles Times, Jan 13, 2014

Fresh: It's an honorable effort, touched by a certain lightness and grace. – Dave Kehr, Chicago Tribune, Jan 13, 2014

Fresh: The strength of the film is really that of Cruise's performance, his finest since Risky Business. – Gene Siskel, Chicago Tribune, Feb 6, 2013

Fresh: Rain Man is so fascinating because it refuses to supply those questions with sentimental but unrealistic answers. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Jul 7, 2010

One of the best films of all time

Rain Man, like most Best Picture Academy Award-winning films has developed into an iconic portrayal of the relationship of two brothers. Dustin Hoffman's performance is considered one of the best acting performances ever to grace the silver screen, and I agree. The humor is equally excellent and original. Hoffman's character will annoy you at times (as we cannot possibly understand his condition) and Tom Cruise's character will make you mad, but in the end, Rain Man develops into one of the most endearing stories ever told.

Endearing, funny, and easily one of my top 10 movies.

This movie is one of the most endearing movies I have ever seen. I have, myself, faced situations that brought me to deal and accept autism. I knew two guy's in school who had two different kinds of autism; one had mild autism, while the other had more severe autism. At first, it was very hard to understand, especially 'cause I had never faced this before. But after being patient and accepting them as people who deserves equality, I was able to accept it. I think anyone whose faced similar situations can connect with this movie.

Instant Classic!!

This movie has become an "instant classic" of mine. Dustin Hoffman gives an absolute flawless performance as Raymond and Tom Cruise gives another brilliant performance as Charlie. This is a movie that I can watch over and over and never get tired of it. This movie makes you want to find the best in everyone. The two brothers are complete strangers when the movie first starts out but by the time it ends it looks like they knew each other all their lives. I am so glad that iTunes made this one availiable. This is one movie that you will never get tired of watching. Well worth the price.
