About the Movie

An authentic and tender portrait of the lives of three young boys in North Carolina’s Bertie County. Junior, Bud, and Dada, each with difficult pasts, attend high school at The Hive, an alternative school for at-risk boys. When budget shortfalls lead the Board of Education to close The Hive, Junior, Bud, and Dada must return to Bertie High School and a system that once failed them.

Beautiful Film!

Raising Bertie is beautifully filmed and full of heart. Powerful and moving story. Everyone should see it!

Authentic and Visually Stunning

Rich, cinematic beauty normally reserved for narrative film; unusually personal access to subjects, earned over six years of relationship-building and 400 hours of filming

A Moving Experience

I have seen Raising Bertie twice in the theater. This film feels prescient. The young men's stories complicate a lot of the discussions we have about what our problems are as a nation and how we draw lines and imagine communities. It is a weighty film of significant impact. A masterwork.
