Based on Puccini's classic opera La Boheme, Jonathan Larson's revolutionary rock opera Rent tells the story of a group of bohemians struggling to live and pay their rent in the gritty background of New York's East Village. "Measuring their lives in love," these starving artists strive for success and acceptance while enduring the obstacles of poverty, illness and the AIDS epidemic. One of the longest running shows on Broadway, Rent was the winner of the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the Obie Award, the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, four Tony Awards and three Drama Desk awards.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: If nothing else, the movie reveals Jonathan Larson's musical to be an illuminating time capsule of a wild period immediately before and after the scourge of AIDS.
Rotten: The movie, directed without a personal stamp of any kind by Chris Columbus, is so slick that the grime comes from a spray can and the grungy bohemian costumes look rented from a Betsey Johnson boutique sale.
Rotten: The scourge of rock-opera, a musical mutation that manages to combine the least savory elements of both with the advantages of neither.
Fresh: In terms of its music and lyrics Rent flickers more than it flames.
truly an inspiration
Finally I requested this movie once a few years back and finally they release it (to bad since I got the movie on here already.) When I rented this movie in 2006, I fell in love. The music was so different from any musical I've seen and I would sing along (which is horrible.) I can't describe the love I have for RENT, it's an inspirational story with music, singing, dancing, but at the same time it brings up important issues that still affect our society today. AIDS, homosexuality, drug addiction... to me I found the first musical that actually had cursing and the songs were not always happy and upbeat. The lyrics would make me laugh, tear up, and would make me smile. Though I haven't seen the musical version yet (I'm going to see them in St. Louis in June), I recommend listening to them after watching this movie. This is orignally a ROCK OPERA rather than a musical so there is A LOT of singing and I personally think that took out few of the best songs out of the movie. Anyways, Christopher Colombus did a fabulous job directing as usual and Jonathan Larson to making a modern La Boheme into one of the longest running shows on Broadway R.I.P Jonathan Larson (I wish he could of seen the impact his wonderful musical had made on the world ...seriously i had tears in my eyes now) Give into Love or Live in Fear <3
FINNALLY! YAY iTUNES! THIS MOVIE IS AMAZING!
I absolutely love RENT I saw the movie in the theater when it came out and I fell in love with RENT and with Musical Theater (I've since veiwed this movie many times and have seen the stage show four times), this movie is musically amazing with the vocals of some amazing Broadway actors who were in the original cast and some of which have won or been nominated for Tony awards (Adam Pascal, Jesse L. Marting, Wilson Jermaine Heredia, Idina Menzel, Taye Diggs). Though some fan favorite songs were cut from the show Such as Christmas Bells (With the memorible line "Kiss Me It's Begining to Snow") and Contact, Chris Columbus managed to keep the intergrity of the Stage show and manage to transfer the magic you feel when you watch the stage show live to the big screen or rather the iPod/Computer Screen in this case. All of the emotion you feel, all of the laughter you laugh, all of the tears you shed while watching the live actors all is brought through in this movie. Not to mention the you get to understand the characters and the plot more. I highly recomend this movie, Musical fans will love it, it'll please the Die Hard RENThead, and it might open the eyes of a few people who don't normally like this kinda stuff.
FINALLY!! its a great movie, almost as good as the show. I wish it wasn't leaving broadway!! =[
