Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Despite its slickness, virility, occasional humor and, if it may be repeated, authentic professional approach, it is well-made but awfully familiar fare. – A.H. Weiler, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: Wayne, of course, walks off with the show -- not by doing anything in particular, but simply by being what he is: at 51, still one of the most believable he-men in Hollywood. – TIME Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Rio Bravo is a big, brawling western. – Variety Staff, Variety, Apr 23, 2013

Fresh: A comic western that ambles through its two hours and 21 minutes, it always has time to pause for a joke, a song or banter among the characters. – Charles Taylor,, Jan 11, 2007

Rio Bravo is a timeless character study set in the old west.

I never tire of watching this movie. The characters are well developed and clearly defined. Rio Bravo is a great Saturday night movie.

Rio Bravo

One of the essential western movies. Even the oddly placed girl, ably played by Angie Dickinson, fits. A professional lawman, faced with a gang of killers motivated by money, and supported only by a green kid, and drunk, and a cripple, chooses to fight for justice. It's what he does. Courage is at the forefront, but is ably supported by friendship, love, weakness, and their antitheses. An alternative to High Noon, it is at least as powerful.
The haunting sound track, featuring a trumpet piece specially crafted for the movie, supposedly inspired Enrico Marricone (Good, Bad, Ugly, et al). The songs are very well done, between Ricky Nelson and Dean Martin, and the aforementioned trumpet piece.
It runs a bit longer than most westerns, mainly due to developing the characters and plot. It never lags or becomes boring. I am always satisfied at the conclusion, and wish for more of the same. Sadly, there a very, very, few in this class.

great movie

one of the few movies I can watch over and over again. one of the best westerns of all time. definitely one of my top ten movies of all time and I'm not particularly a fan of westerns.
