Road to Nowhere

There's a murky, tenuous balance between reality and fiction - particularly when it involves a beautiful young woman, murder, a powerful politico, a missing fortune and suicide. A passionate filmmaker, creating a film based upon a true crime, casts an unknown mysterious young woman bearing a disturbing resemblance to the femme fatale in the story. He finds himself unsuspectingly drawn into a complex web of haunting intrigue, as he becomes obsessed with the woman, the crime, her past and the complex relationship between art and truth. From the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina to Verona, Rome and London, new truths are revealed, and clues uncovered to other crimes and passions, ever darker and more complex.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: If Mr. Hellman's movie only partly fulfills its promise as a gripping neo-noir mystery, his stylistic hallmarks lend it a singularly haunting atmosphere.
Fresh: A stylish, shimmering neo-noir with a multi-layered narrative for which the director's longtime collaborator Steven Gaydos has written an exceedingly elliptical and challenging script.
Fresh: [Combines] an almost quaint self-reflexiveness with state-of-the-art digital filmmaking...
Rotten: Ultimately, the film gets too clever and confusing for its own good, while the slow pacing zaps momentum from the story (and the story within the story).
Do Not Waste Your Time!
This movie is a mess.
I only rented it because of the high reviews.
This movie makes no sense, and makes no apologies.
Hellman doesn't make bad movies. Wish Apple would get some other of his films or all of them.
One of the last great Hollywood directors!
