Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The social satire gets precious at times, but Connery (sans hairpiece!) and Hepburn (swathed for the first hour in a nun's wimple) bring a fervid depth of feeling to their characters' rekindled courtship. – Steve Daly, Entertainment Weekly, Mar 31, 2014

Fresh: Robin and Marian is a film that must stand or fall on the strength of its stars. Fortunately, it has two of the best." – Jay Cocks, TIME Magazine, Mar 31, 2014

Rotten: The idea of picking up the Robin Hood legend 20 years later seems okay at first consideration, but Goldman and Lester never got beyond the premise. – Variety Staff, Variety, Mar 31, 2014

Fresh: Connery and Hepburn seem to have arrived at a tacit understanding between themselves about their characters. They glow. They really do seem in love. And they project as marvelously complex, fond, tender people. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Mar 31, 2014

Sean Connery is the classic Robin Hood, in this version a simplistic honorable man baflled by his times. Supporting cast is marvelous, but the real coup in casting is Robert Shaw as the Sheriff of Nottingham, played as Robin's equally noble counterpart. Note: The surprise ending will make you soar and cry at the same time!

An all time classic *****

Fantastic movie. Robin Hood, returns from the crusades and finds his old life lost in the past. Robert Shaw is fantastic as the Sheriff of Nottingham, and a great part of Richard the Lionheart played by Richard Harris. Audrey Hepburn and Nicol Williamson round out a stellar cast. Best ending to the movie.

High-water mark

Easily the most fascinating Robin Hood film ever, this one is a beguiling blend of legend, history and Romance. Given a brilliant script by James Goldman, a dream cast brings the Middle Ages to bloody, grimy, glowing life. Sean Connery gives his most open, assured, and amusing performance as Robin, and seems both incongruously and ideally paired with an incandescent Audrey Hepburn. John Barry provides the soaringly romantic score, director Richard Lester gives the proceedings his patented ironic nudge.
