About the Movie
In this spoof of the Robin Hood story, Robin (Cary Elwes) returns after a long battle to discover that the good King (Patrick Stewart) has been exiled, and in his place the evil King John (Richard Lewis) rules with the help of the despicable Sheriff of Rottingham (Roger Rees). Robin assembles a new band of merry men, including the Rabbi Tuckman (Mel Brooks), to unseat the bad King, and finds he has a friend in the palace with the lovely Maid Marian (Amy Yasbeth). Unfortunately her keeper, the haggard Broomhilde (Megan Cavanaugh), has installed a chastity belt on Marian to insure her virtue.
Seriously..just watch it.
I think I first watched this when I was like 10 with my older brother and his friends. It was hilarious then...and it still is today. I have no idea why I still like it..seriously NO idea. HA. I guess because it's layed back and fun...a good laugh. Even if it is super cheesy, I know that you have a small place in your heart for the silly comedy you get out of this one--unless you are an arrogant, stiff, and stuck up movie critic....and nobody likes those. : )
Robin Hood: Men In Tights is stereotypical of most Mel Brooks films: brilliantly funny, sharply satirical, and completely unafraid of making fun of itself. The writing is superb, and the musical numbers are hilariously perfect. If you've never seen this movie, what are you waiting for? Download it already! After watching Men In Tights, you wonder how all those other Robin Hoods got away with foregoing their English accents.
"We're men, manly men! We're men in tights!"
This movie never gets old. I must have seen it for the first time 10 years ago or so. For years after my cousin and I would shout quotes from this movie at eachother with heartfelt glee. "Hurt me hurt me, save them save them!", "... I guess no one's coming!", or the very good mafia quote: "He's dead. D E D dead!" The jokes are over the top silly, which makes it work. No halfway tries. Very often these kinds of comedies fail to hold up the second time around. This one makes me laugh every single time...
