Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Rockers is heavily didactic about the tenets of Rastafarianism, but it's also lighthearted, offering much the same dichotomy reggae music does.
Fresh: Rockers is an extraordinarily ambitious film for one that seems so casually put together.
Fresh: Sounds from the golden age of reggae pulse through this breezy 1978 drama.
Fresh: An excellent soundtrack, and an endearingly witty script which digresses through explanations of the Rasta faith and countless idiosyncratic solidarity rituals, make for a delightful piece of whimsy.
"Rockers" is a great tale of right against wrong, of good guys fighting bad ones and getting revenge for all the evil they have suffered. It is also an ode to self reliance, to solidarity, friendship and "Yes we can" spirit. The background is Jamaica in the mid-late 70's, but this story could take place anywhere. Luckily for us, we are treated to fantastic music, absolutely brilliant dialogue (in patois, so it's hard to understand, which is too bad because their use of the English language is fabulously creative and rich), great action. Reggae fans will recognize superstars such as bassist Robbie Shakespeare, singer Gregory Isaacs, producer Jack Ruby, and the extraordinary Horsemouth Wallace. One the island's best drummers (in a land that produced a truckload of great drummers!), he is also a poignant character, both on screen and in real life.
All in all a thoroughly enjoyable movie.
Ahead of its time
This movie is docudrama a dark comedy action adventure all rolled up in one with an amazing soundtrack! It feels and looks real as if the camera crew just went to Jamaica and just followed these people around and filmed them doing their thing. Docudramas have become very popular in the last handful of years And in my opinion this one is the blueprint. I'm glad iTunes is carrying the film and the Sountrack Because they are both rather hard-to-find. Watch the film and cop Do the Soundtrack you will not be disappointed.
