About the Movie

James Stewart, Farley Granger and John Dall star in this macabre spellbinder, which was inspired by a real-life case of murder. Two thrill-seeking friends (Granger and Dall) strangle a classmate and then hold a party for their victim's family and friends, serving refreshments on a buffet table fashioned from a trunk containing the lifeless body. When dinner conversation revolves around talk of the 'perfect murder', their former teacher (Stewart) becomes increasingly suspicious that his students have turned his intellectual theories into brutal reality.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Rope is not merely a stunt that is justified by the extraordinary career that contains it, but one of the movies that makes that career extraordinary. – Vincent Canby, New York Times, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: "A crime for most, a privilege for some" is how Rupert classifies murder, but Hitchcock's eye-am-a-camera technique in Rope is after more than Nazi-superman residue still lurking after WWII. – Fernando F. Croce, Slant Magazine, Jun 24, 2006

Rope Review

Apparently the problem of picture quality has been solved. That being said, excellent movie. Very suspenseful and intelligent.

This Film Was Groundbreaking. Didn't You Ever Notice....? it's a great movie. But what do you expect from Hitch?

Here's the tremendous value of Rope: take a look at how long the scenes are without a cut. He was incredibly innovative in this film. It was done almost as a stage play but with you on the stage.

Wonderful use of lighting in the background and it feels like a city is outside that window. Notice the very long scene where even the cut is hidden; character walks "into" the camera (fades to black) only to come out the other side from black.

This is not only Hitch at his best, it's Stewart at his best as well. What a team!

This one is an aquired taste.

Not everyone who watches this movie will like it, and I know that's true for pretty much any movie but this one is different. It's mostly just dialouge and at times it can be very slow. I personally love this movie as I feel that the climax is definitely worth the wait, but again, not everyone will see it that way. If you're looking for a movie with a lot of action, you probably won't like Rope. Even so, I think it's a great film.
