Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: While both Emily Blunt and Ewan McGregor are enormously appealing actors, Hallstrom has made a movie that pretends it is something it's not -- namely, an intelligent romantic comedy. – John Anderson, Newsday, Mar 16, 2012

Fresh: A charming little movie. – Bill Goodykoontz, Arizona Republic, Mar 22, 2012

Fresh: While "Salmon Fishing" fritters away the comic momentum of its madcap opening chapters, it's like angling -- a pleasant diversion if you can look below the surface and muster the patience to appreciate it. – Colin Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Mar 22, 2012

Fresh: The kind of film you might find on the DVD shelf of a holiday cottage, and that's not necessarily a criticism. – Robbie Collin, Daily Telegraph (UK), Apr 19, 2012

I ended up seeing "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen" on a whim after one of my friends recommended it to me. And I have to say, I really enjoyed it. The acting was brilliant, the direction was well-executed, and the story had a surprising amount of meaning and depth. Basically, the film is about a fisheries expert (Ewan McGregor) who is approached by a consultant (Emily Blunt) to help realize a sheikh's (Amr Waked) vision of bringing the sport of fly-fishing to the deserts of Yemen. What first seems like an absurd and unachievable project soon turns into a "good will" story, as the team puts everything on the line and embarks on a journey of faith and fish to prove the impossible, possible. Although the flick's plot is admittedly a bit clichéd and predictable, it works terrifically thanks to the relaxed chemistry between McGregor and Blunt. Their characters are practically complete polar opposites, but the way they awkwardly interact with one another feels remarkably real and unforced. I especially enjoyed their amusing little quips and conversations from time to time. On the other hand, I felt that some of the melodrama could've been a lot less schmaltzy and sentimental than how it was portrayed by the actors. Plus, I was a little disappointed by the screenplay, as it constantly kept switching back and forth from being a simple romantic drama to a full blown political satire. But other than that, I can't think of any reasons why "Salmon Fishing" isn't worth seeing. It's heartfelt, witty, and benefits from a talented British cast. Sure, it may have some narrative flaws, but if you're looking for a charming, thought-provoking romance, this movie is a great pick.

This is a sweet movie and a wonderful story, a good one to watch on a lazy afternoon. I laughed out loud watching Ewan MacGregor and Emily Blent fall in love. You will, too. It's a little predictable, but really enjoyable to watch. If you are a romantic, this movie is one you'll not want to miss.

Love it !!
