Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: It is a disarmingly and consistently sensitive movie that remains engaging even when its reach sometimes exceeds its grasp. – Glenn Kenny, New York Times, Jan 11, 2018

Fresh: Constructive in the way it invites viewers to consider and discuss issues of intolerance and hypocrisy, even as it encourages those who don't fit the straight, marriage-oriented paradigm to embrace their own identities. – Peter Debruge, Variety, Apr 30, 2017

Fresh: Given its compact running time, the film proves a surprisingly rich experience, one that effectively balances hope and possibility with some of the harsher realities of disenfranchised LGBTQ youth. – Gary Goldstein, Los Angeles Times, Jan 11, 2018

Fresh: Cardasis brings a sensitive eye to the subject, painting a textured picture of Ulysses' solitude and his hunger for self-knowledge. – David Rooney, Hollywood Reporter, Apr 23, 2017

The best

It was just so so good. Please go see it!

A slice of reality...

...told simply. I

I have to say though, I loved seeing gay and transgender performers of color on screen in starring roles. They don't get the opportunity.

I simply wish the story aimed a little higher in the storytelling. It remained a little predictable. However, Kudos for wrapping that in a musical! That part was hella unique!

Fantastic Intersectional Inclusive Film

There's no way that I would rate this film anything lower than 5 stars bc it's important to have films like this watched by the general masses that aren't aware of the struggles of being brown/black and queer/transgender. I love the intersectional approach, I love that the actors playing trans roles are actually trans, I love the musical aspect of it and lastly I just loved the overall message of the film. BUT I do wish that there was more "background" info and maybe more conflict ? I just felt like the film touched topics but didn't really go into the depth of them. I finished the movie kind of disappointed because I was expecting more a resolution to all the issues within the family...I was really excited to see where the love story between Ulysses and the other guy would go but it didn't really take off :/
