Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Whedon knows that he's blazing down a well-worn trail, but he addresses that by deftly adding elements of humor, action, romance and horror and continually confounding audience expectations.
Fresh: This genre picture is still a thrillingly original science fiction creation.
Fresh: As always, Whedon's sci-fi fantasies smartly parallel the serious issues we're grappling with here on Earth, while his protagonists remain mordantly funny in the face of utter disaster.
Rotten: Serenity is so like TV that it ought to come with a clicker so we can switch over to the next movie at the multiplex.

Only one Serenity in the 'verse
FINALLY! I have waited a couple of years for this movie to show up and naturally I only have about $8 in my account...so, regardless of the weather, regardless of how tired I am or how much I DON'T want to go over to the store and buy an iTunes card...I'm going. To anyone who has never seen FIREFLY or SERENITY, please do so. I would recommend seeing FIREFLY first, of course, just to get you totally hooked. Then watch SERENITY so you can cry for a solid hour like I did when...the unexpected happened. I love Joss Whedon and I hate Joss Whedon: you might say this is definately a love-hate relationship with someone I will never meet. To itunes, thank you.
The only movie I recruit people to watch -- EVER
I envy anyone who has not seen Serenity, nor the Firefly TV series that preceded it (also on iTunes). You have no idea the experience that awaits you. I'm not the biggest sci-fi fan. I'm not a Trekkie, nor a wanna-be Jedi. Yet I am obsessed with this film (and Firefly). I've gifted the whole season of Firefly, and have two box sets of the series' one-and-only season circulating amongst friends (and the entire staff at my vet's office). Same with two copies of the Serenity DVD. Now I can use iTunes and gift Serenity, too! I have all the "companion" books, all the subsequent comic books, a Serenity baseball cap, posters, postcards, and -- yes -- Serenity action figures. I started two websites just to try and get enough people interested in a sequel. Yet I'm 43 years old, and no fan-boy by any means. I never do this kind of thing. Watch. Enjoy. Start with the series (Firefly) then move on to Serenity. I wouldn't be surprised if you, too, find yourself soon thereafter saying that you're not the raving fan-boy type, but.... There is something magical in this movie. The characters are like none other you've seen before. You will want to meet them, be with them, fly on their ship. They will stay with you, long after you've watched all that there is to watch in this remarkable story. And maybe, you, too, will find yourself raving, like me, and gifting it and giving it out, too.
Good Conclusion to Short-Lived Firefly
Serenity successfully ties up some of the plot threads of the Firefly television series, while neither requiring viewers to be familiar with the series nor burdening them with a ton of exposition. This is Joss Whedon at the top of his game, bringing you into the action immediately and introducing instantly likable, quirky characters along the way. The cast benefits from having worked together in the series and having spent some time inside their characters' skins, the story line holds together well, and the action, art and special effects pull Whedon's universe together without taking over the show (something most Hollywood "blockbusters" could learn something from).
