About the Movie

Al Pacino's classic portrayal of Frank Serpico established him as one of today's most versatile actors. "Serpico" was based on the true story of a New York policeman who discovers that honesty is not expected to be part of his job. He endures scorn and mistreatment from his fellow cops while attempting to perform his job with integrity. The character of Serpico, combining the best elements of the Establishment and counter-culture, is a tour-de-force for Pacino. The film is a breathtaking suspense story and a fascinating character study as well as a memorable statement about government's inherent flaws.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: A remarkable record of one man's rebellion against the sort of sleaziness and second-rateness that has affected so much American life, from the ingredients of its hamburgers to the ethics of its civil servants and politicians. – Vincent Canby, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: Sidney Lumet's direction adeptly combines gritty action and thought-provoking comment. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: Lumet's biopic of Frank Serpico, the virtuous cop who exposed a network of graft in the NYPD, feels depressingly relevant. – Benjamin Strong, Village Voice, Aug 4, 2004

Fresh: A virtuoso performance by Al Pacino and some expert location work by Sidney Lumet add up to a tour de force genre piece that transcends the supercop conventions to create a moving, engrossing portrait of Frank Serpico. – Don Druker, Chicago Reader, Jun 24, 2010

One of the greatest movies ever made

I can honestly say that now that I have seen somewhere around 400 movies and this is in my top 10. It tells a real life battle of a man against police coruption and I have checked for it everyday on itunes since I first saw it.

This movie should have......

This movie should have changed what happens in police departments and government regarding corruption but it didn't. Greed is still a big part of 'the system' Look at the Palm Beach County commssioners. How many are in jail now? Look at Blagoyavich. Serpico was truly the last American Hero. Great foing Frank in your life and Al in your portrayal.

Classic Al Pacino

This is Al Pacino at his best; an awkward, sexy crusader too idealistic to understand the way the real world works until he is knee-deep and can't find a way out. As a teenager I fell in love with him in the 70s; later in the 80s I was able to watch again and again with the invention of the VCR; this movie just displays his finest acting and sexiest, free-love and bearded self. The true story makes you really feel for the guy.
