Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Excellent cast, headed by newcomer Richard Roundtree, may shock some audiences with heavy dose of candid dialog and situation.
Fresh: Forty years of gumshoe noir collided with black power in this 1971 action classic, the most popular of the blaxploitation pictures.
Fresh: An efficient cop thriller, with a charismatic performance from Roundtree as "the cat that won't cop out when there's danger all about...Shaft!" Can you dig it?
Fresh: A hip, cool, entertaining thriller.
When I was finishing up my basic training at Fort Dix, NJ in March 1971, "Shaft" was released and I saw it for the first time. For an African American male who was drafted into the service of my "Uncle Sam", this movie gave me a new attitude and a swagger I never had. Those of us who didn't run off to Canada to avoid service embraced Richard Roundtree's performance as John Shaft. That movie saved my life because it gave me a reason to grow up and be a man. As a photojournalist, I got to meet & interact with Richard Roundtree, Isaac Hayes who wrote the score and Gordon Parks, Sr. who directed the film. Game changers all.
SHAFT!!!! Nuff said.....
One of the greats! Would love it if you'd add "Trouble Man" with Robert Hooks....Another great film. Ya dig!
Nothing compares to the original Shaft. The gritty New York city in the early 70s with action. A true original.
