Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: "Shaolin" fits in the more somber kung-fu tradition. But it also finds room for the genre's comic strain. – Rachel Saltz, New York Times, 9 sep, 2011

Fresh: Well-mounted Chinese-Hong Kong martial-arts co-production Shaolin elevates enlightenment above brute strength, but weak helming undercuts the pic's punch. – Russell Edwards, Variety, 2 sep, 2011

Fresh: The kung fu itself is great fun to watch, from the discipline of balancing on one foot on a wooden pillar, the other in the air, for hours at a time to the confrontations that send fist and feet flying. – Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times, 8 sep, 2011

Rotten: A well-mounted but soft-edged reinterpretation of a martial arts classic that gives precedence to drama over action. – Maggie Lee, Hollywood Reporter, 2 sep, 2011

There are subtitles

I'm not sure why people are saying there are no subtitles. There are. You have to turn it on. Press that bubble like button in the control bar when the moving is playing. And click subtitle english.

Engaging and Compassionate

This movie had a great story line that makes you really hope for the underdog. As the movie went on I found myself being more pulled in with every second. The fight scenes are great with really well choreographed moves. I also found it amazing how well they were able to incorporate compassion in combination with some pretty brutal fighting. On a side note I saw one review that said there were no English subtitles, this is not true. To activate the English subtitles there is a selection on the play controls, that looks like a comic book dialogue box.

Great movie - just turn on the subtitles

Most folks already covered the movie itself. It is a great story with wonderful characters. I mainly wished to let everyone know that you have to turn on the English subtitles using the control panel that pops up when you play the movie (it looks like a comic book dialogue bubble). Once you turn it on you're good to go! I just hope the folks that bought the movie figure this out.
