Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Mr. Bettany's sketchy, unconvincing screenplay is more interested in Ms. Connelly's execution of exploitative stunts than in seriously examining the social crisis it purports to lament. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Nov 12, 2015

Rotten: Its intentions are noble. Its gaze is harshly realistic. But it's also overly melodramatic. Bettany has the makings of better director than screenwriter. – Chris Nashawaty, Entertainment Weekly, Nov 11, 2015

Fresh: The results are admirable in intent and sporadic effect, but still a mixed bag overall. – Dennis Harvey, Variety, Sep 8, 2014

Fresh: Some people will find it too emotionally wrenching to watch, but there are moments of raw, understated sensitivity, encapsulating the ache of regret at the heart of Shelter. – Rex Reed, New York Observer, Nov 11, 2015

Too bleak for me.

Must See!!!

Connelly and Mackey give phenomenal, haunting performances. This movie sheds an enlightening portrayal of survival from the events in life that can send you spiraling into choices that seem unrecoverable. When all seems lost, you can't help but invest in a hope that love can save these two people who have less than nothing. Beautiful to watch their selfless sacrifices for each other. You will feel compassion for those people you walk by on the street. Unforgettable.

This was a powerful and highly enaging film. Both Jennifer Connoly and Anthony Mackie give incredible performances, putting a human and relatable face on the traditionally ananymous homelessness epidemic. Must watch.
