Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: It seems that an evil aristocrat, executed for a series of murders, returns from the dead to mobilize an ancient secret society that he may have time-traveled into a Dan Brown novel to learn about. Doesn't that sound fascinating? I thought not.
Fresh: Downey never winks -- hea(TM)s too much of a pro for that -- but like the man hea(TM)s playing, hea(TM)s much, much smarter than the movie hea(TM)s in.
Fresh: Though purists may balk at Arthur Conan Doyle's literary world being manhandled into a blockbuster by never-subtle director Guy Ritchie, Downey has a winning take on Holmes: He's always on.
Fresh: It's all knotted together, then unraveled with brio, by Holmes and Watson. There are fisticuffs galore, fiery combustion aplenty, and, yes, my dear reader, clever deduction.
Stylish, Entertaining, and Mysterious
In this version of Sherlock Holmes, Holmes and Dr.Watson both double as martial arts masters and master detectives. And that's ok.
It's a bromance/mystery/action adventure that gives you a little of everything: good acting by everyone, good old fashioned medieval mysteries, some dark magic, and witty comments. You even get many slo-mo fighting scenes and good sceneries to look at.
I personally liked the movie due to the time period it takes place in and the fact that back then, to solve a mystery, you really did need to look closely since more high tech gadgets weren't invented yet.
Or, in this case, you had to be Sherlock Holmes, with very keen senses and sometimes unbelievable problem solving skills.
But the entertainment value of the movie dominates over the sometimes exaggerated things taking place on screen. You'll enjoy the fast pace of it all but probably will feel the movie to be a bit predictable and it sometimes gets ridiculous. It also tends to get too caught up in its style by adding in a few unnecessary scenes of Holmes partaking in underground fighting and walking the audience through a narrated walkthrough of every punch he's going to throw.
But it doesn't get ridiculous enough to make you walk away from it...instead it makes up for time wasted by giving you an intriguing mystery to help Holmes solve...holding your attention to the very end.
Overall it's a crowd pleaser and fine entertainment that leaves you little to complain about.
I didn't really go into this one expecting to like it, but I was surprised. Solid acting on everyone's part, and good storyline.
Robert Downey Jr. did a great job he won a Golden Globe awards but the movies was very good it's has a great action, a good thrill, and a good mystery.
