Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: "Shot Caller" effectively conveys the vise grip of Jacob's options, but that doesn't make it less ludicrous from scene to scene. – Ben Kenigsberg, New York Times, Aug 17, 2017

Fresh: Waugh forgoes cheap action-movie gimmicks, offering up instead a haunting psychological portrait of an intelligent man forced to completely reinvent himself before he can even dream of seeking redemption for his previous sins. – Peter Debruge, Variety, Aug 18, 2017

Fresh: Coster-Waldau ... conveys a strong masculine presence in both sections of the film, and it is fascinating to watch his transformation from privileged family man to hardened con. – Stephen Farber, Hollywood Reporter, Jun 19, 2017

Fresh: Shot Caller is Coster-Waldau's show, and he's up to the task. – Pete Vonder Haar, Village Voice, Aug 15, 2017

Wow

this is honestly one of the best prison / gangster movies of I've ever seen. Completely captivating from start to finish. Reccomend! Reccomend! Reccomend!

Kinda monotone in a way...

It's got a decent enough story, awesome bad guys (howdy Jeffrey Donovan as "Bottles"), heartache, etc- it's well done.
The flashbacks sorta kill any momentum though.

Meh don't waste your time..

Really boring and drawn out.
