About the Movie

“Showrunners” is the first ever feature length documentary film to explore the fascinating world of US television showrunners and the creative forces aligned around them. These are the people responsible for creating, writing and overseeing every element of production on one of the United States' biggest exports – television drama and comedy series. Often described as the most complex job in the entertainment business, a showrunner is the chief writer / producer on a TV series and, in most instances, the show’s creator. Battling daily between art and commerce, showrunners manage every aspect of a TV show’s development and production: creative, financial and logistical. Featuring interviews with the showrunners behind Lost, Boardwalk Empire, Bing Bang Theory, The Good Wife, Sons of Anarchy, Spartacus, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Battlestar Galactica, Person of Interest and Firefly.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: "Showrunners: The Art of Running a TV Show" should probably be required viewing in film/TV studies classes, but as a mass-consumption documentary, it doesn't quite pass the test. – Brian Lowry, Variety, Oct 30, 2014

Fresh: "Showrunners" is a lively snapshot of the not-always-easy intersection of art and commerce. – Sheri Linden, Los Angeles Times, Oct 30, 2014

I’m in awe

This is a brilliantly-done documentary on those creative/management geniuses that run television shows. I’ve always been so impressed by the people who can do this: develop an idea and characters, sustain that vision from one episode and one season to the next, and keep the ship afloat. Attended the premiere with an industry audience that really appreciated the film.

So well done, and very interesting interviews with many famous (and not so famous) folks.

Wait . . . What??

What??!!! No Vince Gilligan . . .Oh maybe just a doc on him. Other showrunners would have to watch that doc.

Great behind the scenes look

Great look at the problems the people in charge of TV shows face. Big and small. There hasn't been anything like this. This doc assembles the great Showrunners of today to talk about their jobs and what it means to be one. Everyone has seen at least one of these shows and these are the people responsible for them. Great watch.
