Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: It's all of 84 minutes. But when it's done, you know you've seen something. – Ty Burr, Boston Globe, May 28, 2015

Fresh: Maclean's film is a wonderfully dreamy, if meandering, take on the western. Like all movies that use their fantastic surroundings, Slow West is best seen on a big screen. – Molly Eichel, Philadelphia Inquirer, May 21, 2015

Fresh: There's more to the story than meets the bull's eye in Slow West, a brainy and genre-defying western by newcomer John Maclean. – Peter Howell, Toronto Star, Jun 11, 2015

Fresh: Slow West crescendos into a bravura shootout between all the involved parties, and it's as gorgeous, nihilistic, and brutally sad as the rest of the film. – David Sims, The Atlantic, Oct 14, 2015

Slow West

Just when you think the Western genre has been explored more than required a first time filmmaker creates this. This film is totally unique, funny, intense and completely entertaining. As per usual, Michael Fassbender and Ben Mendelsohn both give exceptional performances.

brutal western. great acting. some really great shots. music on point. a certain bleak feeling of how every day life during the colonization and devastation of the west probably was. i have only seen life captured that way in a few movies of this genre. bummed its over. will watch again.

A different kind of western

A great story line, amazing cinematography, superb acting. Great sound track as well.
