About the Movie

In 2013, NSA contractor Edward Snowden leaked a large number of classified documents to the media, exposing the U.S. government’s covert surveillance activities. Some call the whistleblower a hero, while others call him a traitor. Spanning his time in the Army, the CIA and the NSA, Snowden uncovers the extent of the government’s spying programs, coming to the realization that the public’s understanding of privacy is far from the truth. His acts have been classified as treason and have made him one of the most wanted men in the world.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: As Snowden, Gordon-Levitt is so muted, so cloistered, that it can be easy to miss that it's a very good performance. – Tom Shone, Newsweek, Sep 22, 2016

Rotten: Stone's flashy filmmaking, including grand set pieces in enormous secret facilities, can't conceal his flat, thin, psychology-free depiction of a modest and self-sacrificing hero who single-handedly changed the politics of our time. – Richard Brody, New Yorker, Sep 26, 2016

Fresh: It's a forthright attempt to engage with this fascinating, opaque figure and show what it cost him personally. – Peter Bradshaw, Guardian, Dec 8, 2016

Fresh: Partiality is the heel in this Achilles film; though to this Achilles film's credit, it also outruns, as storytelling, the tortoise forebodings we might have had about a true-life plot so cerebral and cyber-centric. – Nigel Andrews, Financial Times, Dec 8, 2016

I watched the documentary 'Citizen 4'; and this is a very good movie to fill in some of the gaps (although dramatic and...). Whatever your stance on the subject of metadata and its method of acquiring it; this is one of Oliver Stones (best, recent movies) and JGL is expanding his tremendous ability as an actor as he captures the documentary Snowden persona extremely well. A good watch for understanding this controversial topic and whistle blower who inspired the movie.

I loved it!

The main actor was fantastic! This is one of the best movies I've seen all year.

True to All Stone's Movies...

It's a well-done movie that not only entertains, but also makes you think & evaluate "both sides of the coin" regarding security, freedom, & Snowden, himself.
