About the Movie

Lakshmi(12), lives in her village at the foothills of the Himalayas. When a monsoon destroys the family’s rice paddy, her stepfather negotiates an advance payment from a glamorous “city” woman who offers Lakshmi work as a domestic servant. Filled with hope and pride for the opportunity to help her family, she journeys to India. In Kolkata, she soon learns the unthinkable: she has been sold into prostitution. Lakshmi’s life becomes a living nightmare. She somehow has the courage to endure as she secretly plans a daring escape. Lakshmi succeeds in escaping and returns to the brothel in a police raid to free the others. SOLD is both a call to action and a testament to the power of compassion and forgiveness which define the resilience of the human spirit.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Important story, subpar execution. – Gary Goldstein, Los Angeles Times, Apr 8, 2016

Rotten: Such a solid example of film-industry liberalism's shortcomings that it warrants only the faintest praise. – Ernest Hardy, Village Voice, Mar 29, 2016

Fresh: "Sold" is colorful and visually pleasing, although there is nothing surprising in the rather predictable story. But then again, it was likely not Brown's intent to supply endless twists and turns. – G. Allen Johnson, San Francisco Chronicle, Apr 14, 2016

Fresh: All of this is uncomfortable to watch. Then again, given the subject matter, it should be. – Randy Myers, San Jose Mercury News, Apr 14, 2016
