Rotten: With a cheerful disregard for characterization and visual texture, Anderson relies on his cgi-jocks and set dressers to flesh out David Webb Peoples's by-the-numbers script. – Gary Dauphin, Village Voice, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: It's a big, clanging, brutal, actioner in which we search the murk in vain for the sparks of humanity the moviemakers keep promising us. – Michael Wilmington, Chicago Tribune, Jun 24, 2010

Very underrated

While I'm not claiming that this was Oscar-worthy acting or a futuristic "Saving Private Ryan" this was a good film. It defnitely deserves better than a 10% Rotten Tomatoes rating.
There are some excellent aspects of the storytelling that I think are lost on most audiences. For example, pay attention to how the civilians look at and react to Todd, even when he clearly means them no harm. There is some very real truth in that today, and this is coming from an Iraq War veteran.
The action sequences are top-notch and believable. The hand to hand is solidly brutal, and the final shootout between Todd and the new soldiers is the epitome of the "youth and skill vs. old age and treachery" axiom. There are several sequences that will bother most people, and they should. Some aspects of war are entertaining while some are downright horrifying.
No, this isn't a 5 star film, but it certainly earned 4 in my book.
