About the Movie

Some Freaks follows one-eyed high school senior Matt (Thomas Mann) who meets plus size Jill (Lily Mae Harrington) and falls more in love than he ever thought possible. However, when graduation comes and Jill moves cross-country to go to college, she undergoes a major physical transformation - much to Matt's surprise when he arrives to visit her. While Matt struggles to accept Jill's new look, Jill begins to question whether Matt is really the man she thought she knew. As the distance widens between them, the characters are forced to confront who they are, who they were, and who everyone thinks they're supposed to be.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Playwright Ian MacAllister-McDonald's debut feature is a refreshingly grounded, unsentimental yet empathetic slice of D-list teenage life that goes a bit overboard in its final act. – Dennis Harvey, Variety, Jul 31, 2017

Fresh: Some Freaks explores the way in which those who are teased and tortured for being different can turn on other outsiders, and the emotional trauma of that poisonous isolation. – Katie Walsh, Los Angeles Times, Aug 4, 2017

Fresh: Ian MacAllister McDonald's Some Freaks captures high school/college agony without transmuting it into thank-God-we-survived-it nostalgia. – John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter, Aug 4, 2017

Fresh: All the actors are good, but Harrington is remarkable. It's not just the physical changes in her character, but the genuineness with which she inhabits her. – Bill Goodykoontz, Arizona Republic, Aug 3, 2017

A Beautiful Heartbreaker

Saw this movie at a festival last year, and totally fell in love. Can't say enough good things about the lead actress Lily Mae Harrington. To watch this movie is to be in awe of her. Great script with a stand-out cast and intelligent direction. Worth checking out!!

Accolades don't match the film

While I very much appreciate the premise, this film didn't live up to the accolades it received, At best, this is a student film. The shot composition and cinematography were there but the director should have taken more time to capture the actors in their natural timing -- it would've done the story justice. I was too distracted by the unnatural/off-timing acting to enjoy the film and each time it happened, it pushed me further away from the characters. I think these people were just too stoked to be in a movie and tried too hard.

a must see

This non-predictable, nontraditional story line keeps your interest from beginning to end. The characters are so believable. I found myself cringing so many times as they struggled for some sort of connection in their worlds. Highly recommend this smart film!
