About the Movie

From the creators of the Academy Award®-nominated The Secret of Kells comes a breathtakingly gorgeous, hand-drawn masterpiece. Based on the Irish legend of the Selkies, Song of the Sea tells the story of the last seal-child, Saoirse, and her brother Ben, who go on an epic journey to save the world of magic and discover secrets of their past. Pursued by the owl witch, Macha, and a host of ancient and mythical creatures, Saoirse and Ben race against time to awaken Saoirse’s powers and keep the spirit world from disappearing forever. As enthralling for adults as for children young and old, Song of the Sea is a wonder of magical storytelling and visual splendor that is destined to become a classic.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The filmmakers evoke earned emotion with gentle hands. Even the monstrous antagonist is presented in such an unadorned fashion as to make it almost normal - and therefore creepier. – Michael Ordona, San Francisco Chronicle, Jan 29, 2015

Fresh: Sweet, aesthetically breathtaking ... – Tom Russo, Boston Globe, Feb 26, 2015

Fresh: Enchants on every level: story, voice work, drawing and music. – Michael O'Sullivan, Washington Post, Jan 29, 2015

Fresh: Moore manages this life-affirming touch without being preachy and by simply melding unusual old folktales into a new story filled with visually stunning images sure to captivate children of all ages. – Mary Houlihan, Chicago Sun-Times, Feb 20, 2015

best movie ever for kids

Proud to call this a top favorite animation

It’s one of the few most beautiful animated films I've seen to date, which says a lot given that one of my standards is The Tale of the Princess Kaguya. It's also an ethereal work of art that helps me to better appreciate Irish mythology and story-telling. Although it takes outside inspiration like most films, the final product of both its artistry and story is unique and luminous in its 2D hand-drawn images, a medium which takes rare dedication. The first five minutes especially had me in awe, and the story's themes are ones that can be treated seriously. Constantly talking down to or luring audiences into "feeling empowered" can turn me off from a film, so Song of the Sea was a something of a breath of fresh air. I truly hope to see how Tom Moore's work grows the future and am proud of his cinematic achievements.

Great animation and good story. Reccomended to all my friends.
