About the Movie

Deep in the San Fernando Valley, behind the train tracks and amidst dilapidated warehouses, was rock n' roll's best kept secret. Sound City, America's greatest unsung recording studio, housed a legendary, one-of-a-kind recording console, and became the birth place to the seminal albums that defined 20th century music. Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, Rick Springfield, Tom Petty, Nirvana, amongst many others, all put magic to tape within these walls. It was Rock n’ Roll hallowed ground. Directed by Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) and featuring interviews and performances by the iconic musicians who made their careers in the studio, SOUND CITY tells the story of real rock n'roll history, and celebrates the human element of music, as Grohl gathers some of rock's greatest artists to collaborate on a new album. Using Sound City's legendary analog console, together they continue to create musical miracles in a digital world.

Required viewing for all Engineers

I am an audio engineer and music fanatic, and I can honestly say this should be required viewing for all aspiring musicians and audio engineers alike. Not only is this film chalk full music history, but it delves into a side of music that most people never see. On to top it all off it tells a story that will make you laugh, cry and just shout F%#& Yeah. Watching this film for me was like having a religious experience. Keep up the awesome work Dave!

First 2/3rds Great - Final 1/3 Stunk

It's like they had two directors for this documentary. The first 2/3rds (the part that actually talked about Sound City) was really interesting, and the production value was really high. It was so cool to see and hear so many diverse albums and artists that I loved from back in the day came out of that place (from Buckingham / Nicks to Ratt). Obviously, there was a sound like a fine wine that came out of that studio and mixing board. Nick Raskulinecz is a HERO to any Rush fan ("Clockwork Angels" is their best work since "Moving Pictures"). You've got to absolutely love that guy.

The last 3rd (or so) stunk. A great story went totally off the tracks into, what is in my opinion, an over the top and narcissistic focus on Grohl and Grohl's new studio that features SC's mixing board. My wife and I had to hold our ears listening to Nicks and McCartney's self-indulgent recordings in the new studio. Horrible.

It's too bad since the part that talked about the Sound City Studio was a solid A+
